Reflections from the 2012 Appalachia Service Project Mission Trip

On June 23rd, 28 volunteers jumped in five vans and started on a journey to Tennessee where they would spend a week helping people very much in need. This was the Covenant Appalachia Service Project team doing what they do best. We would like to share with you some reflections of this journey that opened eyes and brought hope to some who need it most.

This was Covenant's 31st year participating with ASP, which itself began 43 years ago in Barbourville, Kentucky. The mission then, as it is now, is to make homes warmer, safer and drier for families in need. Each year, ASP sends our team off to serve somewhere in Appalachia. This year, they asked us to help the people of Carter County, Tennessee. What's it like there? Well, when it comes to space, Carter County is about twice the size of Delaware County, but the population is less than a tenth of what it is here. Almost 1/4 of the people there live below the poverty line (almost triple of what it is here). This is why ASP exists and why we go.

During our week in Carter County, we had the pleasure of serving five families, helping to improve their homes, their lives, and our own. Reflections on our week by three of our volunteers follow.

Growing up in Covenant and being at multiple ASP services, fundraisers and events to support the team as well as my older brother, ASP was always fascinating to me. I didn’t understand why teenagers would take time out of their summer to help fix houses, especially when they knew nothing about construction. But I always knew that I wanted to be a part of it.

One of the things I found at ASP is that the bond you make with the family can be just as important as the construc-tion you do on their house. Another thing I found was that the people in Carter County, Tennessee whose houses we were working on did not have some of the things we take for granted.

The other week, I had the privilege of serving the people of Carter County, TN along with the rest of the ASP team.  The night we got there my team, Dawn, Chris, Paul, and Rachel, got our assignment for the week.  We learned we were going to be working for a lady named Joan and we were going to be replacing her bedroom floor that had been damaged by water from her hot water heater going bad seven years ago.
