Adult Sunday School News

January 17, 2012

There will be two adult studies underway during January and February. Each Sunday through February 19, Ken Prager will look at one of the Seven Deadly Sins with the objective of developing a definition and perspective that works for us in today’s world. We believe this study can help us understand the church’s insistence on the moral significance of sins and virtues in the Christian life.

The remaining classes will cover Sloth and Caring (January29); Wrath and Patience (February 5); Envy and Love (February 12); and Pride and Humility (February 19).

During Lent the adult class will study a book with the whimsical title What’s the Least I Can Believe and Still Be a Christian? The subtitle, A Guide to What Matters Most, indicates the author’s purpose to examine the differences between a faith which emphasizes loving relationships as its central issue and the all-too-common, rigid faith based on fear and a clenched-fist judgmental God. The author, Martin Thielen, is a successful United Methodist pastor in Tennessee, and a marvelous story teller. In the first half of his book he clearly reminds us of ten things we don’t need to believe and in the second half he outlines ten things we do need to believe. Early in February we will ask interested adults to sign-up for this class so that we can get enough copies of this very readable little book. Please watch the Sunday bulletins for further details and plan to join this excellent Lenten study which begins on February 26.
