Spring Mission Trip is Announced
Late last summer Hurricane Irene blew up the east coast of the United States. In many areas it was just a rain and wind event, with not much damage. But in some areas there was significant flooding. One of those areas was in southeastern New York State, including some parts of the Catskills. Some 15,000 families in the Southern Tier of New York State experienced significant damage.
Our mission trip this year will be to Schoharie, NY, about 35 miles west of Albany. Volunteers will be staying in a United Methodist Church in Middleburgh, about four miles away. The downtown area of Schoharie was under four to five feet of water, and all the businesses and churches were damaged; many homes, located closer to the Schoharie River, had even more water damage.
Pastor Larry and the Discovery Service Projects team plan to go to Schoharie from April 15–28, 2012. We are seeking your prayers and contributions. We need volunteers who will join the team for one or two weeks, or for a few days. It is about a five to six hour drive from here to Schoharie, so that allows for more flexibility in volunteer time.
You may want to look at the New York Annual Conference website, at http://www.nyac.com . Click on Mission at the top, then Hurricane Irene Disaster Recovery, then Volunteers Needed. Be sure to watch the video interview with Pastor Charlie Gockel, made two weeks after Irene. It is deeply heartfelt, and gives a feel for the needs in the area. Please ask Pastor Larry for more information.
